How To Retire At 50

How To Retire At 50

If you are looking for an in-depth plan for retirement by age 50, we’re here to help!

5 Steps To Retirement

Follow these steps when you have decided to retire by age 50:

  • Decide To Retire Early
  • Start Saving Money
  • Adjust Your Lifestyle
  • Make Smart Investments
  • Have Contingency Plans

1. Decide To Retire Early

The biggest key towards early retirement is actually deciding on retirement early! In order to retire by age 50, you’ll need to settle on that number years in advance to make sure that goal becomes reality. Give yourself the best chance possible at an early retirement by deciding on it when your 25, rather than 45.

This, of course, seems like common sense, but it is very hard to set this goal while busy climbing the corporate ladder and/or raising a family. Life will certainly get in the way at times, but stay focused on your early retirement goal throughout your career. Financial experts suggest picking up a part-time job or starting a side business to maximize your retirement savings. Asking for a raise or extra hours at your current job could be a good plan, as well. Always resist the urge to live above your means!

2. Start Saving Money

Saving money right now is easier said than done, correct? Well, maybe saving a bit of money is easier than you once thought. Experts tell you to use the four-percent rule for guidance. This rule says that your savings should last 30 years as long as you withdraw four percent of your savings during the first year of your retirement.

If you plan to live off $250,000 for the next 30 years, then you should try to have at least $750,000 in the bank. To estimate how much you’ll need to save, determine how much money you can live off of during retirement.

Retirement Money

3. Adjust Your Lifestyle

Adjusting your lifestyle prior to early retirement does not mean you’ll have to take drastic measure, fortunately. Yet, if you do plan to retire by age 50, then normal methods of saving money will not apply to your situation. Re-evaluate your current savings, spending habits and investment options.

Try to rid yourself of any unnecessary expenses. Generally, this consists of eating out frequently, attending expensive events and going on vacations. The next step to take is paying off any loans or debts as soon as possible.

4. Make Smart Investments

According to the experts, the younger you are, the more room you have for financial risks. Most believe that even if the market crashes while you are in your 20s, you can still regain enough wealth to live a happy and healthy life, financially.

For those planning on retiring early, though, risky investments may not be the way to go. Take a conservative approach to the market, instead. Make sure to diversify and factor in Social Security benefits when creating a retirement budget.

5. Have Contingency Plans

Retiring early will undoubtedly leave several questions to ponder, including:

  • Should I take social security benefits early or wait until I am retirement age?
  • How many income streams will I have after retirement?
  • Should I work part-time?
  • Is my life insurance plan good enough if something happens to me?
  • Can I afford long-term care, if necessary?

Try to have answers ready for all of the questions before your retirement begins. It’s important to have a comprehensive plan for your family’s future.

Delirium Vs Dementia: What Are The Differences?

Delirium Vs Dementia

If you are wondering how to diagnose dementia or delirium, this article will go over the differences in causes and symptoms.

Delirium Symptoms

Delirium, which is known as “sudden confusion”, features a serious disturbance in mood, thought and behavior. Your loved ones may no longer act like themselves. And, unfortunately, these changes can happen very quickly and seemingly out of nowhere. It may be difficult to recognize the cause of these changes, so keep an eye out for some common signs of delirium.

Mood changes, such as anger, agitation, depression and anxiety, may be noticed by loved ones. Sleep patterns may suddenly change, as well. This could mean the individual becomes more active at night and less active during the day.

Slurred speech is a common sign of delirium. The individual may also begin saying things that make no sense at all. Confusion is a large part of delirium. Instantly, a senior may not know where they are or what they are doing.

If your loved one starts to speak of seeing things that aren’t actually there, this is called a visual hallucination. Common physical problems associated with delirium include pain, fever and chills.

Dementia Symptoms

Delirium and dementia both affect cognitive ability, so it is very easy to confuse the two conditions. The most common form of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease. These are a few of the common signs individuals suffering from dementia will experience:

Memory loss is the first noticeable sign of dementia, although this sign will not be immediately apparent. Just like delirium, those suffering from dementia will experience difficulty performing daily tasks.

Changes in mood and problem solving will become noticeable over time. Difficulty focusing and personality changes will also appear during the seven stages of dementia.

Differences Between Delirium And Dementia

Here are the key differences to look for when determining whether someone is suffering from delirium or dementia:

  1. Memory
  2. Speech
  3. Attention Span
  4. Hallucinations
  5. Physical Illness

As stated earlier, both conditions will affect cognitive abilities. But, dementia is more associated with memory loss than delirium is. Delirium is more known for affecting attention and concentration.

Speech changes will be far more prevalent in those suffering from delirium, rather than dementia. Changes in speech are only obvious in the late stages of dementia.

Attention spans will decrease at the end of dementia, but trouble with focusing is one of the mainstays of delirium.

Hallucinations can occur to those with dementia, but they are far more common with delirium.

Delirium is often caused by illness. People suffering from dementia will usually have no signs of physical illness.

What Are The Seven Stages Of Dementia?

Stage 1: The first stage is characterized by healthy people experiencing no signs of memory loss or dementia.

Stage 2: Stage 2 includes people who consistently forget things, usually caused by aging. Symptoms are generally mild and rarely noticed by friends or loved ones.

Stage 3: This stage includes increased forgetfulness and difficulty concentrating, among other things. Stage 3 can last up to 7 years before onset of early stage dementia.

Stage 4: Stage 4 is considered “early dementia.” People suffering in stage 4 will have trouble remembering recent activities/events and increased difficulty concentrating. Decreased self worth and a decline in social interaction are usually included in this stage, as well.

Stage 5: The 5th stage features individuals with major memory deficiencies. Basic activities, such as bathing and dressing, may require some help. Memory loss may include trouble recalling major life events. This stage tends to last up to 18 months long.

Stage 6: Middle stage dementia, also known as stage 6, has individuals who need extensive help with daily activities. Forgetting big events, and family/friends’ names can be included in this stage. Anxiety, delusional beliefs, agitation and personality changes will be on display. Stage 6 can last 2.5 years.

Stage 7: Seniors will have no ability to communicate during late stage dementia. They will require 24/7 care at this stage in life. Typically, the final stage can last another 2.5 years long.

Can I Retire At 60 With 500K

Can I Retire At 60 With 500K

If you are searching for “can i retire at 60 with 500k”, the good news is you certainly can! Use this article as your guide on how to properly save for a happy and healthy retirement at 60.

Can I Retire With 500K?

Most experts believe you need $1-$2 million saved to retire comfortably, but that is not necessarily true. There are many ways to work towards retirement without saving that exact amount of money. In some cases, 500K in the bank will be more than enough to live on. However, you will need to carefully and meticulously plan for retiring with 500K.

Here are three steps to follow:

  1. Save Money Right Now
  2. Budget
  3. Pick The Best Location

Step 1: Save Money Right Now

It’s common sense that the more money you save when you are younger, the more equipped you will be for an early retirement. Saving as much money as you can as early as possible is a crucial step towards the next phase in life. There are many ways you can get creative, trying to save money in your younger years. Always try to take advantage of any extra unexpected money that comes your way. This could mean any sort of work/performance bonus or even a stimulus check. Put the extra money into a 401(K) plan or an IRA. Check to see if your employer will fully match contributions made towards a retirement plan.

Step 2: Budget

Living with a strict budget will be necessary if you plan on retiring with 500K in the bank. You can obviously enjoy your current lifestyle, but keep basic living expenses like housing, utilities and healthcare on a tight budget. If you are having trouble coming up with a figure, go back and look at last year’s bills. Form a budget based off of what you spent in the previous 12 months. Find out exactly which expenses you can either cut out completely or cut back on.

Step 3: Pick The Best Location

You may love everything about where you live; the school district, the parks and your neighbors. But, financial experts say you must evaluate every aspect about your life, including your home’s location. It may be difficult, but consider the idea of relocating to a different area with lower housing rates, if this is possible. Think of this present move as the best thing for your future. No, you may not be able to live in your dream location, but if retirement at 60 is the goal, this is one sacrifice that can be made.

Pro 2: Quality Healthcare Throughout The State

Arizona offers better quality healthcare than most other states, which is great for seniors seeking frequent checkups and appointments as they age.

Pro 3: Low Cost Of Living

Here are two cons related to retiring in Arizona:

  1. Hot weather.
  2. Higher crime rate.

Although temperatures do cool down in the winter, Arizona’s climate remains hot throughout the year. The months of June through August average well above 100 degrees in Phoenix.

Con 2: Higher Crime Rate

Arizona’s crime rate is a bit higher than other states, unfortunately. There are many areas where there is little to no crime rate, though. These areas will feature much lower property tax rates, as well.

Lewy Body Dementia Vs Alzheimer’s

Lewy Body Dementia Vs Alzheimer's

Abnormal deposits of a protein called alpha-synuclein in the brain are known causes of Lewy body dementia (LBD). The deposits, known as Lewy bodies, affect chemicals in the brain, and can lead to alterations in mood, behavior and thinking.

So, how does this compare with Alzheimer’s disease? If you are searching for “lewy body dementia vs alzheimer’s“, this post will help!

Lewy Body Dementia And Alzheimer’s Differences

Some of the main differences between LBD and Alzheimer’s include causes, amount of cases, physical movements, cognition, sleep behavior, hallucinations, facial expressions, disease progression and sex.

Causes

LBD is caused by the buildup of Lewy body proteins in the brain, while Alzheimer’s occurs when amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles within the brain.

Amount Of Cases

These two disorders differ in that one has many more known cases than the other. There are currently more than 5.5 million Americans suffering from Alzheimer’s. That’s compared to just 1.4 million diagnosed with LBD.

Physical Movements

One of the earliest signs of LBD is actually walking difficulty or struggling to balance. Alzheimer’s does not cause any physical deterioration, though.

Cognition

While both LBD and Alzheimer’s are known to cause confusion, memory lapses do not vary much from day to day with Alzheimer’s. LBD, though, can cause an individual’s memory to vary wildly from one day to the next.

Sleep Behavior

People with LBD can experience REM sleep behavior disorder. This is a dysfunction where individuals physically act out their dreams. This disorder does not typically occur to anyone battling Alzheimer’s.

Hallucinations

Visual hallucinations are actually quite common with LBD. While hallucinations will occur to someone with Alzheimer’s, it is not nearly as common as it is with LBD.

Facial Expressions

Individuals with LBD tend to show very little emotion in their faces. This tendency will not develop until the middle or late stages of Alzheimer’s.

Disease Progression

Studies have shown the survival rate after diagnosis of Alzheimer’s is typically 8.4 years. Survival rate after diagnosis of LBD is an average of 7.3 years.

Sex

Men have a higher chance of developing LBD, yet women have a higher chance of developing Alzheimer’s.

Lewy Body Dementia

What Is Lewy Body Dementia?

Lewy body dementia is one of most common causes of dementia, according to nia.nih.gov. Early signs of LBD can be confused with Alzheimer’s or even schizophrenia. LBD can either develop over time alone or in combination with other brain disorders.

There are two separate diagnoses of LBD. One is dementia with Lewy bodies, while the other is Parkinson’s disease dementia. Usually, over time individuals with either diagnosis will develop similar symptoms.

LBD is a progressive disease, which means it takes a long time for symptoms to develop and eventually worsen over time. The typical time span from diagnosis to death is 5 to 8 years, but data shows that a range of 2 to 20 years is possible.

First Signs Of Lewy Body Dementia

Lewy body dementia can be distinguished by three stages: early, middle and late. The first signs of LBD might involve some sort of hallucinations or delusions. These can cause individuals to act out dreams while sleeping. Early stages of LBD can also cause some movement difficulties.

In the early stages of LBD, memory tends to stay intact, but some confusion may be experienced. Mild cognitive changes can be noticed, as well. Another early sign is when an individual freezes in place or gets stuck frequently while doing something as routine as moving around the house.

What Is Alzheimer’s Disease?

Alzheimer’s disease, just like LBD, affects thinking, behavior and memory. This is the most common of dementia, which is a generic term for memory loss. Alzheimer’s has been proven to cause up to 80% of all dementia cases, according to alz.org.

The majority of individuals that suffer from Alzheimer’s are aged 65 and above, but this is not simply something that affects older citizens. Like LBD, Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease with symptoms worsening over time.

Easy Crafts For Seniors With Dementia

7 Easy Crafts For Seniors With Dementia

If you are searching for “easy crafts for seniors with dementia,” this article will provide you with seven great activities!

Crafts For Seniors With Dementia

Here are seven great crafts, perfect for seniors suffering from dementia:

  • Flower arrangements
  • Play with magnetic letters
  • Paper cups for stacking
  • Keep a beat with a homemade shaker
  • Sort through coins
  • Fun with play dough
  • Scrapbooking

1. Flower Arrangements

Arranging flowers is always a productive and enjoyable activity for those suffering from dementia. This is an especially good idea for individuals that once loved gardening. Sit back and let them create some beautiful flower arrangements. These arrangements are perfect to keep in the home for the future. All you need to do is purchase a plastic vase, florist foam, as well as artificial flowers.

2. Play With Magnetic Letters

Put magnetic letters on some sort of metal baking sheet and let the senior come up with as many fun words as possible. This is a terrific brain exercise, for obvious reasons. A simple activity of sorting the letters by color can be enjoyable too!

3. Paper Cups For Stacking

This is one of the best and least expensive activities you can set up. Buy some cheap party or paper cups for the senior in your life. Individuals with dementia generally love the task of stacking these cups in multiple ways.

4. Keep A Beat With A Homemade Shakers

Keeping a beat is a very useful activity that has been proven to stimulate the mind – an essential need for those with dementia. Making a homemade shaker prior to keeping a beat can be an additional task for your loved one. We suggest filling a plastic container with dry beans or pasta to construct the shaker.

5. Sort Through Coins

Sorting through coins is fun and can take a long time to complete. It is also great at triggering memories. This task may remind seniors of when they used to balance a checkbook, set budgets and make weekly trips to the bank.

6. Fun With Play Dough

Play dough can offer fun for all ages, especially for senior citizens. Let them relax with this peaceful activity, creating any objects or shapes they’d like. Always make sure to have cookie cutters on hand while using the play dough.

7. Scrapbooking

For this fun activity, all you will need is a notebook, magazines and/or newspapers, scissors and a glue stick. Make sure you choose a safe pair of scissors, of course. Have the senior in your life look over and investigate all parts of the magazine and newspapers. Then, have them cut out pictures that interest them, eventually gluing them into the notebook. You’ll be sure to enjoy the arrangements they can come up with.

10 Fun Things To Do In Retirement

10 Fun Things To Do In Retirement

Up to this point, your life may have been all about work and raising a family. Retirement is a chance to dedicate time to yourself. If you are searching online for “what to do after retirement” or “things to do in retirement,” then this post is for you!

Fun Things To Do In Retirement

  1. Travel
  2. Volunteer
  3. Get A Part-Time Job
  4. Purchase An RV
  5. Catch Up On Reading
  6. Start A Blog
  7. Fitness Routine
  8. Learn To Play An Instrument
  9. Spend Quality Time With Friends & Family
  10. Public Service

Travel

Retirement is the perfect time to finally take those trips you’ve always been dreaming about. Your work days are now over and the calendar is free. Whether you wish to fly to a foreign country or take a road trip throughout the United States, this is your time to adventure. A common way to travel for many retirees is to visit places they previously explored. Re-visit some of your favorite spots or check a few new places off the bucket list!

Volunteer

Volunteering can be such a rewarding experience for retirees and others. Spend your time giving back, and impacting other lives along the way. There are many resources available to check for volunteer opportunities. You can go through local charities and/or church groups to learn when any opportunities may come up.

Get A Part-Time Job

Even during retirement, it is very common for men and women of a certain age to keep some sort of part-time job. Find something you are really passionate about. Feel free to contact companies or recruiters to learn about any openings that may spark your interest. Adding some extra income and even meeting some new people are just a few great benefits of rejoining the workforce.

Purchase An RV

We mentioned traveling earlier, and there is truly no more enjoyable way to travel than in an RV. An RV is perfect for any long road trips ahead. Perhaps you want to step foot in all 50 states or visit as many national parks as possible. Regardless of the destination, you will always travel in style with an RV. This will give you the comforts of a home, where you’ll still be able to cook, clean and sleep with your own sheets and pillows at night.

Catch Up On Reading

Ease into all of your newfound free time by jumping back into some favorite hobbies. Catch up on all the classic books and novels you simply haven’t had the time for over the past few busy years. Joining a book club and meeting new people that share the same interests is another rewarding experience.

Start A Blog

The older you get, the wiser you become. Do the younger generation a service by sharing your wisdom! Share your favorite experiences, recipes and even work/real-life adventures with a mass audience. Starting a blog is very simple, and it is a great way to communicate with friends and loved ones.

Fitness Routine

One of the best gifts you can get yourself is mental and physical health. Regular exercise is more and more beneficial as we age. It can dramatically improve both mental and physical health over time. Choose some sort of physical fitness that interests you. Going on long walks in the morning or joining a yoga class are two popular options.

Learn To Play An Instrument

Once you’re finally settled into retirement, it’s common for old hobbies to reappear in one’s life. To add to that, there are usually a few hobbies that you always intended to get to, but never found the time. Learning to play an instrument or learning a new language will keep you sharp mentally, and even spark some new interests along the way.

Spend Quality Time With Friends & Family

This is generally priority number one for retirees and the elderly. Family and friends may have moved around due to jobs over the past few decades, so use this time to travel and catch up with them.

Public Service

Choosing to get involved and make a difference in the community is a great use of time. Help others and make an everlasting impact in the community by jumping into the realm of public service.
